Abstract:
I discuss the possibility of a confined but chirally symmetric phase ("quarkyonic"), where there are massive but chirally symmetric baryons, as first discussed by Detar and Kunihiro. For heavy neutron stars, there is a region of density where a Fermi sea of chiral partners of the nucleons forms. This leads to Urca neutrino emission which is greater by three orders of magnitude over Urca or modified Urca processes.
