Abstract:

Barchan dunes, formed under approximately unidirectional winds and limited sediment supply, are abundant on the arid surface of Mars. In the absence of global meteorological data on the planet, dunes could be used to constrain atmospheric processes, surface properties and the presence of volatiles. In the talk, we will discuss modern physical models for the formation and evolution of dunes, and review how are they affected by the distinct environmental conditions created by the atmospheres of Mars and Earth.
