Avia Raviv has been awarded the prestigious Adams Fellowship
The Fellowship is awarded to continue her Ph.D studies in the field of theoretical physics
Avia is a Ph.D. student of theoretical high energy particle physics at the School of Physics and Astronomy. Together with her supervisor, Prof. Yaron Oz, she studies non-relativistic quantum field theories and the applications of Lifshitz scaling to gravity, to quantum field theories in the hydrodynamic regime and to supersymmetry.
Lifshitz field theories obey an anisotropic scaling symmetry which scales differently space and time. This symmetry is observed in materials near second order zero temperature phase transitions also known as quantum critical points. It is believed that the Lifshitz symmetry is responsible for the strange metallic behavior observed in a variety of materials such as high Tc superconductors and heavy fermion compounds.
In her research, Avia is interested in long standing questions in the field of hydrodynamics and condensed matter physics such as the study of turbulence, high temperature superconductivity quantum critical points. These fields of interest relate particle physics to condensed matter physics in a way which may reveal new properties of the laws of nature.
