Laboratory in Analytical Chemistry
The School of Chemistry Laboratory of Advanced Methods in Analytical Chemistry welcomes 3rd year undergraduate students to become familior with modern instruments and methods of chemical analysis commonly used in chemical research and industrial laboratories in Israel and worldwide.
The laboratory course is scheduled during the second semester following the first semester lectures on Advanced Methods in Analytical Chemistry.
The laboratory provides 8 analytical stations with the following instruments (two of each):
-
Atomic Absorption (AA) Spectroscopy with Flame Atomization System (and Atomic emission)
-
Gas Chromatography (GC)
-
Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with Diode Array detector
-
Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS)
Learning how each instrument works and its corresponding analytical methods, and practice with a variety of analytical tasks takes 3 meeting (once per week) each of 4 hours. It starts with the instrument, its design and operation familiarization, continues with the basics of method development for the typical analytical tasks, and ends up with some interesting challenging analyses that might be proposed by the students themselves. This approach provides the students with an understanding of an and the skills for instrumental analyses to perform practical work in standard industrial environments, as well as the opportunity to fulfill their own small analytical research projects.
The laboratory has well equipped samples and solution preparation facilities with all the supplies and auxiliaries that are necessary for efficient and comfortable work on instrumental chemical analyses.
The laboratory shares its space, instruments and knowledge with the Tel Aviv University Center for Analytical Chemistry, thus students can enjoy its hospitality and analytical capabilities during their M.Sc. and Ph.D. studies.
