Earthquake Center
Israel is located at the edge of an active tectonic plate boundary that has produced devastating earthquakes and can generate strong earthquakes at any time. In Israel, the potential risk posed by earthquake hazard is further compounded by the rapid population growth and the successful economic development. The primary aim of the Earthquake Centre is to prepare the Israeli population for the next big earthquake thereby saving lives. The center will be a platform that fully integrates earthquake research with education and preparedness, directly transferring the scientific expertise of TAU earthquake researchers to the community.
The mission of the center will be to lead interdisciplinary earthquake research and outreach. To this end it will integrate:
-
Research: Carrying out state-of-the-art earthquake science
-
Training: Educating students and junior earthquake seismologists
-
Scientific Cooperation: Developing interdisciplinary research and international partnerships
-
Education: Operating a centre for earthquake public education and preparedness
-
Advising: Providing expertise to decision-makers, governmental agencies and NGOs
-
Services: Offering earthquake-related services and earthquake monitoring products
