Abstract:

Tau leptons' large mass and ability to decay hadronically makes their decay product difficult to differentiate, at trigger level, from those of QCD jets. In addition, the harsh timing and resource constraints imposed by both the trigger hardware and the 25 ns bunch spacing of the LHC require a minimal but robust tau trigger algorithm. I will demonstrate that a boosted decision tree (BDT) based tau trigger provides a viable solution to both these issues. I will also explain how the BDT was optimized to maximize the efficiency of the tau trigger.
