Abstract:

The Standard Model (SM), while the best description we have of the laws of nature, is known to be incomplete. Many SUSY and exotics models which seek to fill the gaps left by the SM include long-lived particles which can leave displaced tracks and vertices throughout the ATLAS detector. Signatures that include these displaced particles are challenging to detect, because the standard reconstruction algorithms in ATLAS operate under the assumption that most interesting physics points back to the proton-proton collision point. I am presenting the results of a recent paper (https://journals.aps.org/prd/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevD.101.052013) which searches for a class of hidden sector models in which a Higgs or Φ boson decays to a pair of long-lived hidden-sector scalar bosons ss which in turn decay back to displaced fermions, resulting in pairs of displaced hadronic jets in the ATLAS Inner Detector (ID) and Muon Spectrometer (MS). This search was performed using a specialized trigger as well as specialized displaced track and vertex reconstruction algorithms in the ID and MS.
