Abstract:

I will describe recent JWST spectroscopy of a photodissociation region (PDR) in the low metallicity N12 star-forming region in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC).

An abundance of molecular hydrogen (H2) rotational-vibrational lines are observed.

I will discuss the fundamental H2 quantum mechanics and spectroscopic properties required for proper interpretation, with emphasis on the ortho- and para-forms. The JWST observations provide unprecedented and beautiful confirmation of basic astrophysical PDR theory.
