December 2021: Burstein: Testing CRISPR-based diagnostics in space

Dr. David Burstein, Edmond J. Safra member, and his lab members, will test CRISPR-based diagnostics on the upcoming Rakia mission in the International Space Station.

In collaboration with Dr. Gur Pines (Volcani Institute), the researchers are sending a CRISPR-based diagnostics experiment to the International Space Station as part of the Rakia mission. Eytan Stibbe, the second Israeli astronaut, will test whether this technology is applicable in microgravity conditions. If successful, CRISPR-Cas systems could be used for accurate diagnosis of infection of the crew members in space missions, and in the future, even diagnose crop diseases in space farming.
