August 2021: Edmond J. Safra Center supports TAU iGEM team

The International Genetically Engineered Machine (IGEM) competition is a worldwide synthetic biology competition. Hundreds of groups from around the world participate and present novel ideas and solutions for key challenges in synthetic biology.

This year, a TAU team led by Prof. Tamir Tuller, Edmond J. Safra member (Engineering), will participate in the competition for the third time. The team includes fifteen excellent students from Engineering, Biology, Medicine, Computer Science and Bioinformatics.

This year’s project - Communique - aims to create a synthetic biology tool that optimizes genes to be differentially expressed in a desired bacterial strain, preventing them from being horizontally transferred, and therefore creating safer genetically engineered microbiomes.  This technology has great potential in many fields of research and development, including human and plant microbiomes, agriculture, food tech, antibiotic resistance, oil degradation, and many more. The research is based on interdisciplinary techniques in synthetic biology, bioinformatics, machine learning, and engineering.

The Edmond J. Safra Center is one of the iGEM TAU team's supporters.
