November 2021: Silver medal to TAU team in iGEM

A team of TAU students won a silver medal in the 2021 International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition.

iGEM is a worldwide synthetic biology competition where every year hundreds of groups from universities around the world participate and present novel ideas that address current global issues. The iGEM annual contest took place on November 4 2021 online, and TAU team participated for the third time.  The TAU team, led by Prof. Tamir Tuller, Edmond J. Safra Center member (Engineering), included fifteen students from the Faculties of Engineering, Medicine, Life Sciences and Exact Sciences.

The TAU team, which was partially supported by the Edmond J. Safra Center, developed an innovative technology for selectively engineering communities of bacteria. The new technology allows for the first time to engineer genes into a language that can be understood only by handpicked bacteria within the community. This ensures that the desired species alone can utilize the gene, even when it is passed around within the community. The technology of the TAU team could contribute to human health, food-tech, agriculture industry, and green energy development.

The team has submitted a patent application related to the novel technology and is working now on a manuscript and on a server that will allow researchers in the field to efficiently use the technology.

The TAU iGEM achievements were featured in the online newspapers YNET.
