Prof. Avivi Yavin - Biography

Avivi I. Yavin was born in Zichron Yaakov, Israel. He received his M.Sc. degree in physics and mathematics, as well as a degree in philosophy from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. In 1958 he earned his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Washington in Seattle. He became a full professor of the University of Illinois in 1968. He did his research in nuclear physics in the United States, Canada, France, and Switzerland.

 

Back in Israel, Yavin established the Department of Nuclear Physics at Tel-Aviv University and was the first dean of the Faculty of Exact Sciences there in the years 1971-1976. In 1978 Yavin founded the Research Project on Peace at Tel-Aviv University and spent much effort to achieve scientific collaborations between Israeli and Arab scientists.

 

Yavin's published books are: "Academia and Peace – Thoughts and Struggles", "On Love and War", "The Rape of a Country", "Doves and Hawks", and "The Old Man and His Intelligent Animals", all five books available from NW Book Publishing as well as from the internet (Amazon etc).

 

Avivi Yavin married Rivka Krimski in 1951. They have three children, ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
