Abstract:

We initiate a systematic analysis of the renormalization group flow in disordered quantum systems, with applications to quantum phase transitions in the presence of disorder. The major difference from quenched disorder in classical systems is the non-locality of the replica theory. Despite this fact, we will see that the renormalization group can be applied in this case. The result is a non-local flow of operators, as opposed to pure systems. A local renormalization group approach can be used directly in the original disordered system, without using the replica trick, and we will see that it gives the same results. We will also see that in disordered systems the scaling exponent z is running, and give a general argument for the appearance of Lifshitz scaling.
