abstract:

It is for almost a century that the diffusion approximation for the radiative transfer in the Earth atmosphere is applied. We solve the radiative transfer equation and show that this approximation is invalid. Its usage for line formation in the atmosphere is wrong.

We discuss a general planetary atmosphere and show that this problem is general.
